In my office stands a saying by the Maori philosopher, poet and artist, Puti Hauraki. It is inscribed in his hand on a page of hand-beaten flax.

Of course for me, being a native New Zealander it carries a special significance, but it is more than that. Behind those few words lie an entire universe of meaning; a meaning of individual significance, of leadership; of what Barack Obama calls the 'audacity of hope' – having the audacity to believe despite us being told otherwise; the decision to embrace vision is our choice – this is the reality of leadership.

We have a chance now for all of us to have an impact of which we never dreamed … … it will be groundbreaking for all organizations that flourish despite the economy … … not only to make it through, but to be stronger and better especially in the positive effects of their mission. That is truly exciting! "
